Seven Marathons on Seven Continents in Seven Months

Wednesday January 30, 2008
How's this for amazing feats? An Irish man recently ran seven marathons on seven continents in seven months. Mark Scanlon's epic journey started with the San Francisco Marathon in July 2007 and then continued on to marathons in Longford, Ireland (Europe), Sydney (Australia), Nairobi, Kenya (Africa), Buenos Aires, Argentina (South America), the Artic Circle (Antarctica), and finally Mumbai, India (Asia). The 24-year-old undertook this '777 Challenge' to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society, in memory of his father who died from the disease .

Incredible highlights of his races include running in zero-visibility, blizzard conditions during the Ice Marathon, surviving a bout of food poisoning in Kenya, and completing two of the marathons within a week of each other. Get more details on Scanlon's marathon adventures.

    (1) Richard Donovan says:

Mark Scanlon was not the youngest person to complete a marathon on all seven continents. Tim Harris of Great Britain was 23 years old when he completed the task one year before Mark Scanlon on 28 January 2007. Tim Harris is also recognised by Guinness World Records as the youngest person.
