How to Run Faster
Saturday March 29, 2008
My friend Marcy is training for her second 5K this spring and, like many runners with at least one race under their belt, she wants to run faster. So what's the secret to shaving some minutes off your race time? You might assume that the key to running faster is running more miles. But, in reality, if you're running more miles at the same pace you've always run, it's not going to make much of a difference. The only way to learn how to run faster is, simply, to run faster.
If you're fairly new to running, and you've never tried speed training before, here are some simple things you can do to start running faster.

Thanks for this great advice! I can’t wait to start putting it into action.
Actually, running more miles at the same pace will make you faster. Physiologically, your body becomes more efficient the longer you run. Speed work and tempo runs are indeed a must, but you have to build on those from a base of longer runs.
thanks for your comments! runner2, I agree with what you’re saying — I was just pointing out that you won’t see very significant drops in race times if you’re always running the same pace during training. And running faster in training helps prepare you mentally to take it up a notch in races.
