Why Do My Toes Feel Numb When Running?

Monday July 21, 2008
Numbness or a tingling sensation in the toes is a common complaint among runners. The cause is often wearing running shoes that are too tight or tying your shoelaces too tight. But if you've made sure you have the proper running shoe fit (you should be wearing running shoes that are 1/2 size to a full size bigger than your street shoe size because your feet swell when you run) and your shoelaces are not too tight, another possibility is a neuroma. Although the name is somewhat scary-sounding, neuromas are a benign condition and highly treatable condition. Find out more about neuromas from Foot Health Guide Terence.

Ms. Luff, does your diagnosis change if the ball of the foot also goes numb with the toes? This often (but not always) happens after about 15 minutes or 2 miles, indoors as well as outdoors. I do have Raynaud’s Syndrome, so maybe that’s a factor?
Thank you,
Angela

Hi Angela,

That sounds like it might be a different issue, possibly related to your Raynaud’s Syndrome, since that condition does affect blood flow to the extremities. I suggest that you talk to your doctor about it to get a definite answer.

good luck!
