Romanian Wins Women's Olympic Marathon

Sunday August 17, 2008
After breaking from a large lead pack around the halfway mark, Constantina Tomescu-Dita of Romania won the Olympic women's marathon decisively yesterday, in 2:26:44.

The race for second was much more suspenseful. Catherine Ndereba of Kenya took the silver medal and China’s Zhou Chunxiu finished third, just one-hundredth of a second behind Ndereba.

The American hope for a medal ended early in the race, as American Deena Kastor pulled out at about the 5K mark with a foot injury.

In other distance races, American Shalane Flanagan captured the bronze medal in the women's 10K, finishing in an American record time of 30:22.22. She's the first American woman to medal in the event since 1992.
