World Record in Men's Marathon Shattered
Monday September 29, 2008
Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia broke his own world record in the marathon in Berlin on Sunday and became the first person to run the 26.2-mile race under 2 hours 4 minutes. Gebrselassie skipped the Olympic marathon in Beijing last month, fearing that the air pollution would exacerbate his exercise-induced asthma and affect his future performances. Instead, he choose to run in Berlin. The 35-year-old Gebrselassie shattered his previous mark of 2:04:26 (last year in Berlin) by 27 seconds, running the flat course in 2:03:59.
