Ab Workouts for Runners
Wednesday January 7, 2009
One of my running-related goals for 2009 is to build a stronger core. Building core strength can help improve your running form, increase your endurance, and prevent fatigue. As runners, when the center of our bodies are strong and stable, our legs and arms are much more relaxed so running feels, well, easier. If you've ever felt yourself slouching or had lower back pain towards the end of a long run, strengthening your core will definitely help prevent that.
Having just had a baby, it's been a while since I've done any ab workouts. My plan right now is to incorporate a series of core strengthening exercises into my routine three times a week. Our video, Ab Workouts for Runners, is a great place to get started.

I definitely have noticed a difference in my running since i have started to work on my core–not just my abs but my obliques and most especially by lower back muscles. It is so much easier to let my legs relax into the run which gives me more stamina and makes it much more fun.

Never really having much back pain before I was alarmed when I could harldy get out of bed last day of the year! I could not walk, I had to crawl to the bathroom. My partner took me to the ER. I was dianosed with sciatica! Boy this is not fun at all. So after taking all the pain killers and cortisone I still had a lot of pain in my right leg. I went to see a chiropractor who a friend recommended. Long story short he found that I was carring 13 ½ pounds more on my right side then my left! Two to three pounds is normal. I had torn my ACL in my left knee iback in high school over 20 years ago. I’m sure that accounts for a lot of the shift to use my right side.
Now I am on a 28 visit schedule to get re-aligned. My right leg was 1 ½ inches shorter then my left leg! After just one adjustment my lets are almost even again!
My sciatica is better, but not gone yet. I hope to pain free soon.
And believe me I will be doing a lot of core training.
It sucks not being able to run…or walk! So important stuff here…Do your core strength training!
