Control Halloween Candy Cravings

Follow me on:

I have a huge sweet tooth and I don't like to keep candy in the house. But, at Halloween time, we always have a bowl filled with tempting, bite-sized candies. I can't help but sneak some candy, even though I know that I'm not running enough to allow for all those extra calories.

I wish I could give out pretzels, toys, or money to those cute little trick-or-treaters, but I remember being disappointed as a kid when neighbors gave out those kinds of "non-candy" treats. I don't want to be "that mom". So, if you're like me, and you need strategies for making sure the candy goes into trick-or-treaters' bags -- not your mouth -- try some of these tips:

Wait to buy your candy. The stores may be having great sales on Halloween candy right now but, if you can't resist it while it's in the house, pay a little extra and buy your candy the day before Halloween.

Don't blow it at work. If the candy situation is under control at home and the problem is pesky co-workers with candy jars and bowls, ask your co-workers to charge you for a piece of candy. Offer them a dollar (that they can then donate to a charity) for each piece of candy. If you know you have to pay for it, you're less likely to be tempted to reach into that bowl.

Chew gum. Sugarless gum can keep your mouth busy and gives your mouth a taste of sweetness without the high calories. If you already have something sweet in your mouth, you'll be less likely to crave candy.

Don't buy your favorite candy. If you love Snickers bars, you're going to be much more tempted to grab a few from that big ol' bowl. So give out another candy that may not be as appealing to you.

Drink low-calorie hot chocolate. It's just about the season for hot chocolate and sipping some will keep your hands and mouth busy, while satisfying your sweet tooth. If you don't like hot chocolate, sip a cup of herbal tea instead.
