After hearing the disappointing news that today's New York City marathon was canceled, some of the would-be marathoners have decided to come together as a running community and put their free time to good use by helping victims of Hurricane Sandy. Rather than traveling to Staten Island for the start of the marathon, a group of hundreds of runners will be running through the hard-hit borough to run with backpacks of much-needed food and supplies to distribute to victims. Other groups of runners -- many organized through social media -- will be heading to other areas of the city devastated by Sandy to help with clean-up efforts.
Some disappointed NYC marathon runners have registered for other upcoming races and will be raising funds to help the victims. Some marathon race organizers are donating portions of the race registration fee to relief funds. The U.S. Road Sports & Entertainment Group will donate $20 to hurricane relief and recovery efforts for each full participant who registers between November 4th and November 30th for the Palm Beaches Marathon and / or the ING Miami Marathon. The Competitor Rock 'N' Roll series is offering 20% off their San Antonio and Las Vegas marathons to any 2012 NYC Marathon entrant, and will contribute another 20% from each entry to Hurricane Sandy relief.
