I'm a big fan of running quotes, as well as motivational or funny sayings on T-shirts. But on a recent stop in Lady Foot Locker at a local mall, I saw a shirt from Nike that I found quite appalling. In bold letters, the front of the shirt read: "Lazy But Talented". Hmmm...so, in other words, let's just rely on our genetic gifts instead of actually working hard to reach our full potential. It was a huge departure from Nike's typical positive and inspiring messages, and I was disappointed to see that the company chose to celebrate athletes with a bad work ethic. And, maybe I'm being a bit naive, but are there really that many cocky, unmotivated athletes out there who would wear a shirt like that? If a runner on the team I coach showed up to practice in that shirt, I'd send his lazy butt out for some extra hill repeats until he felt a little less talented.
What do you think? Would you find extreme pleasure in finishing ahead of someone rocking this T-shirt? Or would you be the talented runner bold enough to wear it? Share your comments below.
