Bust Through Your Summer Running Slump

If you're feeling unmotivated to run right about now, don't feel bad -- you're in good company. Many runners lose their running mojo around this time of year because of tough running conditions (i.e., hot weather), traveling on vacation, and the fact that their fall races still seem far away.

If you find yourself in a bit of a running slump right about now, here are some tips for giving yourself a big motivation boost.

Stay cool. If the heat is your excuse for not running, try running in the morning, the coolest part of the day. I like to lay my running clothes out the night before, so when the alarm goes off, I get dressed without even having a chance to talk myself out of it. But if morning running is just not your thing, hit the treadmill instead.

Try something different. To bust through your slump, you may want to experiment with a different cross-training activity. Now's a good time to give aqua jogging or water aerobics a try.

Treat yourself. I always find that wearing new running gear or clothes gives me a little motivation boost. Summer running clothes are starting to get marked down, so you can find good deals on shorts and tank tops.
