MP3 Players--Perfect for Running?

There are several options for runner who want portable music. The MP3 player is definitely the most used these days, so let's start there.

Pros

  • Some have started to include radio, voice recording feature, or even a stopwatch to add to its uses
  • Can make MP3s from CDs, Internet radio, or just buy MP3s
  • Can download news/television podcasts to listen to your favorite programs on the run
  • Most hold several hours worth of playback, some are even expandable
  • Very small and easy to transport
  • Most come with an armband or neckstrap for running with them
  • Many models fit in the key pocket that running shorts usually have
  • Better sound quality than CD or tape players
  • Are bound to keep getting more inexpensive as this is a large market

Cons

  • Not everyone knows how to use them, and the instructions vary by model
  • Not all models allow you to skip or repeat songs
  • Cost much more than most CD or tape players (low end models run about $80, but the more useful ones run closer to $200)
  • Each model may require different software, some easier to use than others
