Guide Review - Camelbak Alterra Mars Orange/Dark Green
I love Camelbak hydration systems. The hassle of water bottles is one of the most annoying parts of running to me. It seems like the tops never stay open right or they spill and they are certainly unpleasant to carry. So if you've been hassled by carrying your water bottle, the Alterra is a great answer for you. Camelbak's Big Bite Valve is perfect for drinking on the run. No drips, no mess, and it's always open when you need, closed when you don't, without the need of your hands.
The only problem I have with the Alterra is that it only holds 28 oz. That's fine if you are wearing it to a marathon (that has waterstops) or don't need more water than that, but if it's also coming on trail runs with you and you plan to be out for several hours, it can be a problem. For most people, 28 oz is plenty though.
I can't rave enough about the no bounce system. The Alterra has bungees that keep the water tight into your body even as you drink it down; this is what keeps the bouncing to a minimum. No backpack style or waistbelt I've seen can compete with the Alterra on this point.
