Preparing for the Future:
Bremer rode horses and was a star swimmer as a kid, and then became an accomplished cross-country runner in high school. He went on to attend the United States Air Force Academy, where he competed in swimming and fencing. After graduation, Bremer was assigned to the Air Force's World Class Athlete Program in 2001, which allowed him to train for the pentathlon fulltime.
Bad Luck:
By 2003, Bremer established himself as one of the premier modern pentathletes in the United States. He won U.S. Nationals in 2002 and placed third in 2001 and 2003, and looked to be in excellent position to qualify for the Olympic team in Athens. But a broken foot prevented him from making the team.
The Road to Beijing:
The U.S. Air Force allowed Eli to return to full-time training with the World Class Athlete Program in late 2005. His perseverance paid off when he won Pan American Championships in 2006 and 2007, earning a berth on the 2008 Olympic team.
