How to Avoid Post-Marathon Weight Gain

By November 7, 2013

Follow me on:

A marathon runner on my team recently told me she had gained a few pounds after she completed a marathon last fall.  "How can I avoid  that this time around?" she asked. Her experience is a very common one. Many marathon runners continue their increased calorie consumption post-marathon, even though they don't need the extra calories to fuel their runs. The extra calories and decreased exercise can lead to weight gain over the course of a few weeks or months. Fall marathoners also have to contend with the busy winter holiday season, when there's not a lot of time to exercise, but plenty of opportunities to eat.

If you're hoping to avoid putting on a few extra pounds post-marathon, or you're just looking for some ways to avoid weight gain during the holidays, check out these tips.
